Chapter Ten
Aliam sat and stared at Eveen’s feet. His
tears had long ago stopped falling, there
were no more left to give. He felt his heart
slowly crumble apart, the weight of his
mate’s death bearing down on it. He closed
his eyes and hung his head. He pictured
Eveen smiling up at him as they made love.
He could feel the softness of her skin
beneath his fingertips, the smell of her sweet
scent as he buried his face in her hair. She
was everything to him. She was his entire
world. And now she was gone.
“Aliam”—Keddrick rested his hand on
his shoulder—“it’s time to go.”
Aliam didn’t move. He wasn’t going
anywhere. This was where his mate was, so
this was where he’d stay.
“Aliam, the sun is about to rise, you
have to come inside,” Keddrick said.
“No.”
He could hear Keddrick sigh. “My
friend, you cannot stay here. You know
what will happen if you do.”
“That’s the plan,” he mumbled.
“Aliam, I can’t allow you to do that. You
—”
He finally looked up to Keddrick and
yelled, “Tough shit! If this is where my mate
eternally rests, then so shall I.”
His sire growled and tightened his grip
on Aliam’s shoulder. “We will take her back
to the coven. I promise you she will be
treated with utmost care. Now, you can
either help carry her back, or be carried back
yourself.”
Aliam looked away when he felt the
tears begin to well.
“My friend”—Keddrick’s voice was
closer to him now—“think of your mate. She
was put through a horrific execution. Don’t
you want retribution to whoever did this to
her?”
Aliam sucked in a deep breath as the
blood in his veins began to boil. He clenched
his fists at his sides and his breathing
became ragged. Just the thought of ripping
the heart out of whoever did this to his mate
sent a surge of vindication through him.
Keddrick was right—he had to find out who
did this.
And kill them.

Damien pushed through the doors to
the training room. Tonight had been
stressful and mournful. Now all he wanted
to do was release some of his anger and
practicing with his sword always helped. It
seemed he wasn’t the only one that had
some anger to dispense. He saw Larken in
the back of the room, the wooden beam
placed there for practice being demolished
as he swung at it with his sword.
“Mind if I join you?” he asked as he
approached Larken.
Larken swung around, his sword
pointing to Damien. The man seemed almost
crazed. Never had Damien seen such rage in
someone’s eyes. Damien took a step back
and held his hands up in surrender.
Larken heaved a deep breath and
lowered his weapon, the fury fading from
his gaze. “Damien, don’t sneak up on me
like that.” The man turned back to the
wooden beam and looked it over.
“Would you rather be left alone?”
Damien asked.
“No,” Larken quickly replied. He turned
back to Damien and smiled weakly. “It’d be
nice to have a little bit more of a challenge.”
Larken pointed to the beam behind him.
“Not getting much action out of that thing.”
Larken’s smile changed to a sly grin, his eyes
narrowing and gleaming with mischief.
Without warning, Larken advanced on him,
his sword swinging dangerously close to
Damien’s chest.
Damien didn’t hesitate as he drew his
own weapon and returned the attack. It felt
good to release the tension that had built up
inside him.
